Diluted Characters

ALL HAIL BIRI BIRI!!!!

It’s about time we sink into the Accelerator arc, which means plenty of Mikoto and Kuroko! But delighted as I am about their comeback, I can’t help but feel the same way as Washi. When it comes to adaptations, I’m generally tolerant of whatever modifications the original undergoes, be it a change of plot or the introduction of new Anime original characters etc. as long as the adaptation sticks to a certain degree of sanity. However, if there’s one example of an aspect which does irk me, it’s toning down a lovable character’s personality.

Obvious point in case being Shirai Kuroko.

Is that all there is to your passion for your beloved Oneesama?

Where’s the super possessive freak we were waiting for? ^^;

I was hoping to see something like this

* Tonogata = Gentleman

…and this.

Kuroko is one of my favorites, mainly because she plays a big role in serving much of the comedy in both Index and the Railgun Manga. She’s your typical young girl who has too much akogare for an “older” role model, and instead of simply standing on the sidelines and admiring her object of affection from far, she takes the initiative of boldly involving herself in her target’s life. And we all love a ferocious green-eyed monster, don’t we ;)? On top of that, she’s a cunning pervert to boot (maybe NSFW).

Also, as much as I’m a fan of Arai Satomi, I still don’t think she’s that suitable for the role. Initially, I had a bit of hope in her because of her innate ability to do insane characters like Kuroko, but it seems the writers decided to turn Kuroko into an individual with a calmer disposition (as expected of a rich, ojousama?). At least they’re exploiting another one of Arai’s forte, which is her talent in effortlessly delivering credible high class and/or polite speech but it would have been interesting if she was given the chance to tap into Kuroko’s psychotic side as well. There are still plenty of opportunities in future arcs, but whether or not the writers decide to loosen the restrain on Kuroko’s level of obsession with Mikoto remains a matter unseen for now.

Yes, Noto Mamiko has worked part-time before as a real miko :). Wonder if it has something to do with her being cast as Aisa.

Despite the slight change in characters, this episode is still enjoyable if only for the return of Mikoto and Kuroko alone. Hope this arc won’t get bombarded with too much dialog instead of well-deserved action.
